Are you planning to race at the National Championship (Airdrie) or the Western National Grands (Stoney Plain) or the Provincial Grands & Alberta Championship (Calgary)? Then read this:
We've been receiving questions as to whether or not Trial Members or Calgary-Only Members can "race" at these events and the answer is "no" because these 2 classifications of memberships do not include the Alberta Bicycling Association license and insurance required to race at provincial, western national and national races. Only "full" members have the license and insurance and can therefore race at these events.
That said, those of you who have Trial or Calgary-Only memberships have 2 options: 1) either upgrade your membership to "full" membership in order to race OR, 2) as Trial or Calgary-Only members you are more than welcome to participate in the weekend (without racing) by joining our open track Friday 10Sep2010, watching/supporting/volunteering at the races Sat-Sun 11-12Sep2010 and most definitely participating in the fun and festivities of our 30th Anniversary Celebration Saturday evening at the track. Primitive camping is available at the track Fri/Sat night of the grands weekend. This would be a great experience for all the newer riders to see a major race (this is the biggest of the year typically) with all age groups right up to the Elites for 20" and 24" cruiser class. We hope you join us! See you at the track.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS: 1) From now until the grands 10-12Sep2010 every Tues/Wed coaching night there will be a work party for anyone that wishes to help out to prep the track (and behind the scenes work) leading up to the grands, so any help you can lend is greatly appreciated. 2) We desparately need cash/prize donations (from businesses, where you work, where you shop, etc.) for our raffle table at the grands. This could be apparel, sporting goods, gift certificates, tools ... anything you'd see yourself wanting to win at a raffle table. NOTE: please bring your donation to the track by Sun 5Sep2010 so we can keep it/organize it in the moto shed in time for the grands weekend. 3) We still need volunteers to work certain tasks during the grands weekend. Please see Michelle Giangualano at the track to sign up. Remember: volunteering and concession time is required if you plan on qualifying for travel/race money from the casino payout. 4) Our last coaching nights of the season will be Tues/Wed 14-15Sep2010 5) Our last district "points" race will be Sunday 19Sep2010, then we'll have Sunday-only fun races thereafter (after the grands there will be no more Thursday night races).

Greetings Calgary BMX Family, As you should all know by now, our 10-12Sep2010 Provincial Grands and Championship races are coming upon us very quickly so please read through these important updates and requests. We need everyone's help! 1) Today, Wednesday 11Aug2010 there will be open track AND a work party in lieu of coaching. In fact, every Tuesday and Wednesday coaching night from next week on until the Grands there will be a work party. While your kids are on the track, so should you be. We need all hands on deck as there is much to do and there are plenty of people that will be happy to let you know how you can help out, whether on the track, off the track, in the moto shed, in the bike shed, concession, etc. ... and remember "Many hands make light work"
2) Please find Michelle Giangualano either at our track or during this weekend's Provnicial Race at Cochrane to get your name on the volunteer sign up sheet. We need to fill a lot of jobs with shifts during the 10-12Sep2010 Grands weekend and there's something for every level of ability. Jobs include: track maintenance (before and during race), concession (remember to qualify for your casino $ you need concession time as well), gate operation, 50/50 Draw, staging, garbage, recycling, BBQ, raffle table, finish line runner, awards distribution after Sunday race, parking control, rider supervision during open track/practice, etc.
3) There will be a club meeting at the track Wed 25Aug2010 6:30pm to go over what still needs to be done to prep for the big race and 30th Anniversary Celebration we're hosting at our track 10-12Sep2010. We appreciate your every effort to be there.
4) Many of you have seen the Donations Request Letter (find the link at the top of our home page) distributed a few times earlier this year. Well now is the time to go to all of your contacts, employers, local businesses, etc. to get raffle prizes for our raffle table (please see Chris Bullivant or Ali Madsen (403) 984-8436 or alyssa.madsen@gmail.com to bring your prizes to) and sponsorship for various sections of the track (see any of the executive members with those opportunities).
Remember, this is the biggest event for a long time to come, it's the 30th Anniversary of Calgary BMX and we've got the biggest race of the year to celebrate it. Let's unite and host our visitors Calgary-style and show the pride of our club. I look forward to seeing everyone at the track.

Greetings Calgary BMX Family: We had a great time out at our Open House, Garage Sale and informal work party today. The day started off cloudy with occasional showers but the afternoon was warm and sunny. We had some new potential members come out and try out the track as well as some visitors from the Okotoks, Cochrane and Red Deer tracks. This announcement is to let everyone know that we need to have a club meeting tomorrow following the Sunday race (race starts at 2:15pm and will end sometime between 3-4pm then the meeting commences immediately after race). Now that race season is upon us with weekends being taken up by out of town Western National and Provnicial series races, time is precious so it is important that we meet as a club to discuss some business. We also really need everyone to do their best to volunteer with various tasks that are required to run the club and its races. This and other items will be discussed. See you all tomorrow.

Update!
Greetings Calgary BMX Family ... VERY IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY DOWN: Yesterday, right before last night's executive meeting, we had just received the food/beverage estimate for the Casino Royale adult year end party and it was decided by the executive to make a slight change in the best interest of the club and its resources. Calgary BMX will still provide food and "non-alcoholic" beverages throughout the evening, however the $20 casino chip allotment (or more if you wish) will be paid be each participant that wishes to take part in casino gaming activities that evening. We appreciate that not everyone would necessarily wish to so now there's a choice. For those that wish to enjoy casino gaming (poker tournament, blackjack, craps, roulette, slots or any combo), it is very important that we know well ahead of time how many people would like to play (especially if we're going to book a poker table or two and/or a blackjack table or two). For this reason we request that when you Please RSVP Aly Madsen at 403-984-8436 or aly.madsen13@gmail.com by 31Oct2009 (not only for your attendance at this event but also to participate in the poker tournament or other gaming). In order for the casino to book off poker or blackjack tables specifically for us, we need enough people to make it happen so we need to have confirmed numbers of who wants to participate in a poker or blackjack tournament. The winner(s) and Calgary BMX will split the proceeds of the winnings.

Last Thursday, September 17 was our last Thursday race night.

The Calgary tour de nuit Society is employing a community-based social marketing approach for its program to develop sustainable and active transportation options in Calgary through on-street, closed-road bicycle rides that offer a glimpse of what dedicated bicycle commuting infrastructure can achieve, offering citizens real alternatives to single occupant automobile commuting. On Sunday August 23, (10am - 4pm) the CtdnS is hosting an outdoor bike festival to encourage people in the community of Calgary to get involved in sustainable forms of transportation and to break the stereotype that all commuter cyclists are aggressive riders. Our festival will be unique in that it will welcome people of all ages and skill levels to come and enjoy the benefits of the cycling community. There will be children's activities and bicycle safety, refreshments, entertainment and contests. We will also be hosting a bike tour called the “Ride the Road” tour that will allow participants to ride on a car free route and experience the freedom of casual commuter cycling in Calgary.
Calgary BMX is looking for 3 or 4 Families to Volunteer to man a booth and possibly perform a 15min. presentation to the festivle.
Please email of call Barb Pastuzko if you are interested. barbpastuszko@shaw.ca (403) 863-5351.

Coaching Our new coach this year is Michila Negenman. Michila is replacing Mitch McLeod. We also have a new assistant coach Natasha (TAZ) Vergara. You may remember them from last year’s fundamentals coaching on Tuesdays and the great job they did for us. Tuesdays this year we are going to hold the Fundamentals coaching on the same day as the Expert Coaching. There will be some overlap so we all will have a good opportunity to get to know each other. Fundamentals will run from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Experts will practice 7 pm to 8:30 pm. Expert coaching will be done by Damian Bisset.
